This morning Issa Rae, the talented mind behind the sensationally popular Awkward Black Girl, officially announced the new series she’s producing and airing exclusively on her channel. The brilliantly titled How Men Become Dogs will be premiering Tuesday the 19th of March alongside the likes of Roomieloverfriends, Fly Guys Present The F-Word and Rae’s own series Ratchetpiece Theatre and The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl.

Issa Rae has had a busy few years, writing, directing and starring in her own hit series (known to fans simply as ABG) which has steadily managed to build a highly engaged and extremely dedicated fanbase. Working under the Issa Rae Productions banner, Rae then grew her brand by seeking out other talented web-content creators and producing their shows, curating a top quality line-up of premiere, independent black entertainment on her channel – and all whilst working hard on writing the second series of ABG, and hosting her own opinion show Ratchetpiece Theatre.

Shortly after ABG’s first series ended, Issa Rae was invited to join Pharrell Williams’ enigmatic YouTube pseudo-network i am OTHER, where the second series of ABG launched exclusively – whilst it’s impossible to say how much clout Pharrell’s celebrity attachment bought to the second series, in terms of sheer numbers alone Rae’s own channel (where series 1 is uploaded) currently has almost a million more views than Pharrell’s alternative network.

With the newest series of Awkward Black Girl having just ended, it’s unclear what lies ahead for the groundbreaking comedy. Whilst I have no doubt there will be a series 3 in the near future, I can’t help but wonder if i am OTHER will be playing host this time around. Rae’s second series may have captured the public’s eye, garnering far more press than the first, but its views were a significant drop from the million+ numbers that series one managed to draw in.
